There is no doubt that the puppet theatre is the most entertaining way
to address sensitive issues in society. With the newly established team
in Lautoka, the Fiji Red Cross Puppet programme offers a sensible way to
deal with issues such as HIV/AIDS, STIs, marijuana, filariasis, dengue
fever, disaster preparedness, blood donor recruitment, drug and alcohol
abuse, environmental issues and even nation building.
Since starting in 1998, the puppets are multiplying and, during 2004,
Fiji Red Cross puppets crossed many boundaries, entertaining and
educating over 80,000 children and adults alike. Our puppet teams in
Suva and Lautoka historically led the Red Ribbon Relay during the World
AIDS Day celebrations. The tour was a huge success in terms of the
number and range of target groups reached through these puppet shows.
Puppetry reaches out to people in an entertaining way and is easily
understood by using local language and jargon and even traditional
chants and music. It is much easier for the passing of important health
and social messages without losing the attention of the audience.
